In 1895 New Zealand’s first Hockey Club was established in Kaiapoi just outside Christchurch, from the outset the game was played and supported by both men and women and this support continues today.
Hockey New Zealand is proud to work with its 32 regional associations each year in hosting more than 35 national age group or Secondary School representative tournaments. These tournaments take place all over New Zealand and see hockey enthusiasts from 13 years and under right through to University level come together to have fun and compete for the thrill of being the best in the country.
Particularly high profile events on the domestic hockey scene include the annual National Masters Tournament - New Zealand's largest single code Masters event and Hockey New Zealand's premier domestic competition - the National Hockey League or "NHL".
The NHL takes place at venues throughout New Zealand across four weekends in September and October and brings together our very best hockey players to represent one of 8 main regions in a competition for the ultimate goal of National supremacy.
