The Hockey New Zealand Umpires Council is a group of umpires and technical officials who are committed to assisting the national hockey community to keep pace with international trends in the modern game, and to provide high quality officials to domestic tournaments.
The Council will:
- Provide coaching and development programmes (see Coaching and Development)
- Assist Assocations to develop structures for club umpires and junior development
- Assist schools to align umpires with teams attending tournaments
- Appoint umpires and technical officials to National tournaments
- Identify promising umpires and manage their pathway
- Provide mentoring for umpires involved in national tournaments
- Provide pathways for FIH international gradings and technical appointments
- Run seminars for umpires and officials
- Organise accreditation courses and examinations
- Provide up to date interpretations of the Rules of the Games (see FIH website fihockey.org)
- Present rules awareness sessions to Associations
- Promote Association theory sessions using Hockey NZ Umpire Council theory exams
As a result, some umpires and officials will develop their skills to a level where they will be invited to national tournaments, elite clinics and even international events.
In order to assist New Zealand umpires achieve their goals, the Council has been structured to deal with issues facing associations, club hockey, schools and domestic tournaments. The Council consists of two parts: the Strategy Committee and the Operations Committee.
The Strategy Committee consists of three members (one member will also chair the Umpires Council). Their main focus will be to provide leadership, guidance and direction to the Hockey NZ Umpires Development Manager and to the Operations Committee.
The Operations Committee will consist of members who will individually take charge of portfolios in the following areas: associations, secondary schools, technical officials, coaching and development, appointments and technology.
